OUR MORTGAGES.

Dalgety's Review publishes figures which show that the increase in the total amount of mortgages registered in New Zealand for the six years ended March 31st last has been phenomenal. The aggregates at the close of each of the past seven years were:— March 31st. Mortgages. 19 °4 £45,41)3,552 lf W5 £49,030,811 1906 £53,480,091) 11)07 £59,097,070 1908 £65,453,940 1909 £'72,294,069 1910 £77,771,721

The increase during the past six years has been £32,278,169, or about 75 per cent., and the demands of the future are likely to be considerable, as a good deal of development work remains" to be done. The Wellington (£21,7*30,651) and Canterbury (£17,000,483) districts together account for more than half the total. Otago has only £4,903,532 of the amount and Auckland £8,592,592. Southland's mortages total £5,491,852, and Taranaki's £6,326,983.
