AMBURY'S SPRING OPENING.
THE SHOWROOMS' SPLENDOR. Ambury's spring opening is a fixture that is marked mentally on the ladies' calendar, and is looked for regularly and eagerly. It is here—or, rather, it will ■be here this morning at 9 o'clock—and crowds of ladies will tread those stairs to-day, anxious to obtain a glimpse and a pick of the largest gathering of trimmed millinery seen in New Plymouth this season. But there's not half enough room to allow of the season's importations being opened up. A News representative spent some time last evening amongst the new goods, and came away impressed with the idea that this season the weil-known millinery house is more than ever prepared to dress a very large portion of the populace. Buying in all departments has been large, but whilst price has not ibeen allowed to stand in the way of procuring all that is newest in' the season's wear, the buyer has so studied out the buying problem as to make it possible .to study even a limited purse and still be well and fashionably dressed. Nowhere is this more noticeable than in the millinery department, where smart but sensible ■ ready-to-wears, trimmed with scarves, quills, velvet ribbon, etc., are shown in close proximity to dainty pieces of headwear that would stand tiie test of close inspection and critical comparison in' any company. Let us take a few of the models, which, by the way, are not built on those expansive lines which the comic artists are so fond of suggesting. A Villet'ard hat of white crinoline silk, with handsome black and gold'bandeau, a wreath of tiny pink orchids, surmounted by a light mass of tucked tulle, with satin straps finishing under the brim, is a very dainty specimen of the Parisian modiste's art. Contrast this with the beautiful black toque of folds of beaded net, full crown of pink roses, rosette of tulle, a black beaded cabachon, and ospreys; or with the spreading hat of fancy plaited natural straw (very fashionable) with pale blue underlining and clusters of roses. A "Benaudine" hat of saxe blue basket straw is artistically decked in blue, old rose, and brown primulas in clusters. Crimson-cheeked cherries figure conspicuously on a putty straw. Blacks and black and whites are exceptionally fine. Take, for instance, the new willow ostrich* plume in black and white, on a black tulle shape, with black and silversequmned 'broad band to finish. Ladies will be pleased with the popularity and the beauty of .the toque this year, and that of "Bleriot" blue, with chiffon crown, passementerie brim, and silver caibachon and osprey will be hard to eclipse. The new shot effects are very fine in some of the chiffons and silks. A larger toque in a one-color scheme is a reseda green of crinoline, threaded through with lovely merveilleux ribbon, massive wisteria crown, and finished with a lovely bow at the side. But there's not space to describe the whole two or three hundred models on view. There are some nice ladies' bonnets, and a good range of maids' and children's hats, i , al >; some very fine new silklace braided coats, very stylish goods. In the costume department there is a very wide range of goods. The silk dust coats are there in all the fashionable colors mcludmg greys, and a good assortment of motor coats. No finer showing o silk underskirts has been made bv »?n '* ~e Colors includin g wiuestain, mulberry, blues, cream, white, black reseda mauve and so on, whilst these'and vanned stripes are obtainable in moi"t,t,es - , Go]f fkirts; black voile skirts with net panels and applique; new fashionable princess robes with Oriental trimming; tweed tennis costumes, are all smart goods. Blouses cannot be described here, ibu-t there are lovely embroidered goods, particularly i n black and cream the 'black silk taffetas bcina special feature. 'Some have .the new Pierrette collars. 'Coming to the ground floor, we noticed the casement cloths and trimming* to match, damtv floral sateen en tonne, new art muslins, and other new and -irt' istic furnishings. Cushion covers fincloths and pure Irish linen hand-embroid-ered bedspreads are good goods. Comin* to the dress department, there were dis° played a very heavy stock of shantungs guaranteed pure linens, silk and siikstrlped voiles, delaines, crepolines (silkembroidered), the new cannon-ball twotoned shantungs, silk-striped poplins, and other materials in navies, saxe blue, amethyst, mulberry, reseda, heliotrope view rose,-browns,-cream and black
There are all-silk shantungs and silkstriped voiles in exclusive dress lengths, the greys being very stylish-looking. The black and grey striped dress goods, and grey floral patterns on black, will appeal to the more elderly. The new Paisley silks and satins and lawns and two-toned mercerised striped linens are going to be the rage. The firm shows a big range of all-over laces and nets and edgings and insertions to match, new Peter Pan and Pierrot neckwear, ostrich stoles, dainty silk and muslin pinafores and frocks for the little ones, new belts of all colors and styles, motor-veils, richly embroidered blouse pieces, and some thirty patterns in white embroidered linen robes. Sunshades are here to match all the colors previously described, and in scores of designs and styles. The men's department is replete with the new season's goods, and there's a big show of boater straws, Paris ties and scarves, tennis shirts, Panama hats, new half-those in the new style, new silk handkerchiefs with colored borders, and *o on. As before stated, to-day is show
