DREDGES FOR NEW ZEALAND.
COULD COLONIALS MAKE THEM? By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Monday. At a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board this morning the engineer, now in Europe, recommended the acceptance of the tender of Symons ana Co. at £38,000 for the construction of a Freehling dredge. The report gave rise to discussion in the matter of the support of local industries. Mr. Russell, M.P., strongly urged that inquiries be made in New Zealand to ascertain whether the work could be done locally. Mr. Taylor, M.IP., and other members endorsed Mr. Russell's sentiments, but the opinion was expressed that no local firm was likely to put down the plant necessary to construct a dredge. It paid to spend capital on a place for locomotives, because repeat orders were to be expected, but in the case of dredges there was little prospect of keeping the plant employed.
