DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondents.) WAIONGONA. There was a good attendance at the last of the season's euchre parties on | . Friday evening. Card playing commenced soon after 8 p.m., and fourteen games were played. The ladies' prize, a pair of pictures, was won by Miss M. Henwood. For the gentlemen's prize, brush and comb in case, Mr. L. Henwood ' and Mr. A. Feakins tied, and agreed to "cut" for the win, with the result that Mr. A. Feakins was successful and was awarded the prize. The success of these popular entertainments has been largely! due to the efforts of Mr. E. Hunt, who has given a good deal of his own time, and spared no trouble in helping with the arrangements throughout the season. The Daily News is becoming deservedly popular in the district.. Those who take it lose no opportunity of speaking in its praise. Some who have not. seen a copy for some time do not recognise the paper in its enlarged and improved form. ■ ■ EGMONT VILLAGE. An Egmont Village crib team journeyed to Kaimiro on Tuesday to play a team representing that district. An interesting match eventuated. On the count at the finish of the prescribed number of games it was found that the result was a tie, so a further round was played, the Village proving victorious by two games. Messrs G. F. Dewhirst and F. Cheffings annexed the trophy for the highest scorers on the winning ,side. The home team afterwards entertained the visitors to supper. The Village team so far stands unbeaten for this season. As anticipated, the proposal for the bridge loan was carried unanimously, the voting being 39 for and none against. A concert and dance in aid of the ' funds of the Cricekt Cluib was held in tltt hall on Wednesday evening, and was well attended, and everything went off swimmingly. Mr. A. Morton occupied the chair. The programme was as follows:—Overture, Mr. Geo. Marsh's, orchestra; song, Mrs. George; song, Mr. Inman; pianoforte solo, Mrs. Matthews; song, Miss Hill; gramophone selection, Mr Davis; reading, Mr. A. Morton; song, Mr. Fen ton; pianoforte solo, Miss M; Rudd; song, Miss, Hill; gramophone selection, Mr. Davis; reading, Mf. A. Morton; song, Mr. G. F. Dewhirst; pianoforte duet, Mesdames D. Price "and R. J. Marsh; recitation, Mr. E. Dewhirst; selection, Mr. G.. Marsh's .orchestra.' The singing of the National Anthem concluded an excellent programme. After the concert willing hands soon cleared the floor, and dancing was kept up till 2 a.m. Mr. Geo. Marsh's ■ orchestra supplying excellent music. Mr. W. Batten acted as M.C. During the evening refreshments were dispensed. , I understand that the effort was a marked success financially. . Next Friday the school concert, Which is at present occupying the attention of those concerned, will be heh}. t On Thursday evening the Debating Society held its fortnightly meeting. The programme was readings and recitations from Shakespeare. Messrs A. Morton, G. Foster, G. F. and E. Dewhirst rendered items. As there was afterwards still some time at the disposal of members two impromptu debates were held. T'he subjects under discussion were, "Does child slavery exist in Taranaki?" and "Should we smoke?" In both cases the negative side prevailed.' ■ - 1 >• Egmont Village dancing, 'enthusiast?, journeyed to Kaimiro on Friday to attend a concert arid dance held 1 in the hall there. They speak in high terms of their; hosts' hospitality. •• •' ; On Saturday evening the ing of the' Boxing Club wasi held.' This' is really the first meeting at wh'ichthingj: have been in proper 'going brdeW In-; structor O'Byrne put several "new-! chums" through their paces and a good night's entertainment and exercise resulted. The local, youth is very keen and despite the weather there Vas a very fain' .muster. . ~ j , I understand that Mr. R. Ja,mes, who has been suffering from blood poisoning, fa now well on the road to recovery. It is to be hoped he will soon 'be about .again. - i The snow is already melting from .the mountain and before long the stream of tourists to that most popular week-end resort will be seen passing .through our Village,'.enlivening the sfciijTwith their shouts and laughter. Taranaki people and tourists always patronise the mountain freely in the season and all the traffic from this side passes-through our Village. ,
