The Right Rev. Dr. Cleary, new Roman Catnolic Bishop of Auckland, writing to a friend in the northern city, stated that it was his intention to leave for Auckland almost immediately after his consecration at Enniscorty Cathedral, County. Wexford, Ireland. The consecration took place on August 21, so news of the Bishop's departure may be received at any time now. News has been received in Melbourne to the effect that Mr. C. M. Alexander, of the Chapman-Alexander mission, underwent an operation for appendicitis at his home in Birmingham, England recently. The operation resulted successfully, and Mr. Alexander hopes to join Dr. Chapman in opening a mission in Chicago and New York during October. The death occurred at Trentham on • Friday of Mrs. Young, wife of Mr. T» Young, barrister and solicitor, of the firm of Young and Tripe. Mrs. Young was a daughter of Mr. O. E. Tolhurst, of Wellington, general manager in New Zealand of the Union Bank of Australia. Death came with quite tragic suddenness, for up till the previous day MrsYoung had been, apparently, in the enjoyment of normal health. Mrs. Young leaves one son. The death is announced from Balclutha of Mr. Archibald Anderson, one of the pioneer settlers of New Zealand, at the age of ninety-three years. He arrived in Wellington in 1839, afterwards removing to Otago. About fifty years ago lie acquired considerable prop- , erty in the Olutha district, where' he aince resided. The committee appointed to consider the application of the Rev. C. £. Porter (formerly Wesleyan Methodist minister at Masterton and Hawera), reported to the monthly meeting of the Wellington Presbytery that his credentials, education and ordination were all hi order, and were highly satisfactory. He was found to be a preacher of superior ability, earnest Christian character, and had proved ihimself to be a successful minister for sixteen years in a sister church. It was suggested that his application should be forwarded to theGeneral Assembly with a strong recommendation that he be received into the church, and that the usual year's probation be dispensed with in his (jase. In consequence of the retirement of Mr. Hutton a number of promotions n. the Post and Telegraph Department have been decided upon. Mr. D. Miller,, chief postmaster at Wanganui, will be appointed to chief postmaster at Wellington; Mr. G. Sampson, chief postmaster at Greymouth, will be promoted tochief postmaster at Wanganui; Mr. H. "Kissell, assistant postmaster at Christchurch, will take Mr. Sampson's place at Greymouth, Mr. W. Beswick, accountant at Wellington, will fill the assistantpostmastersliip at Christchurch; Mr. P. G. Bar wood, Wellington, will fill Mr. Beswick's place, and Mr. A. Jones will, fill the vacancy caused by Mr. Harwood's promotion. The death occurred in Masterton on Monday afternoon of Mr. George Douglas, familiarly known as "Blind Douglas," aged seventy-three years. He was a native of Roxburghshire, Scotland, and about 1864 settled with his brotiiev the late Mr. William Douglas, of Te Mahanga, in Hawke's Bay. Subsequently he removed to the Wairarapa, and for many years followed fanning pursuits at Opaki. Loss of eyesight caused him to relinquish farming life and he took up* his residence in Masterton. The deceased at one time owned the Dry JHver estate, and was fomerly proprietor ol the Lake Ferry Hotel. He leaves a grown-up family aid two Inbthen*— Andrew Douglas, of Wairarapa, and Mr; J. Douglas* of Hawera. , _
