It is expected that the testing of cows belonging to members of the recently- ( formed cow-testing.association at Kaupo-: konui will be commenced almost immediately. One of the oncers of the Dairy Division is shortly to visit the farms to discuss the matter the dairymen, and to point out tfrfe .way in which the work should be done.' ; The shortage, of ; "beef, in the United States must be' regarded as a serious matter in order to 'give rise to such a suggestion as a bounty to ibe paid by the (Federal and iState Governments to farmers who will raise Ibeef steers. This recommendation has been put forward by Mr. Wagner, a New York meat packer, who proposes that the bonus should be paid for a few years, until the supply of beef cattle has become equal to the demand. ' In addition to a record price paid for land! recently, Southland can also claim credit, remarks a Southland exchange, for ia record figure being put up for young cattle, and it is possible that the same has not ever been surpassed in any part of the Dominion. The transaction in question concerned a very fine line of 100 Hereford cross calves, and were parchased iat £4 a head. The calves averaged 11 months in age.
