The Porirua horse, Diabolo, still holds his position in New Zealand Cup betting. In the Flying at Bulls Clemora was neglected on the totalisator and ran a poor race. If Golden Eagle could be induced to do 'her best she might run prominently at Avondale. She, , should be much benefited by her racing at Marton. The Maoriland horseman, R. Cameron, has been engaged to ride that good horse Trafalgar in his, spring engagements. Scratching for the Avondale Cup include Poietiers, Admiral Soult and Pukenui. The first-named was freely supported in doubles, and his defection will prove a windfall to the pencillers. Wimmera is occasionally given a run over the fences at Hastings, and the Great Northern winner jumps in good stjfl#. Punters fell-in heavily over St. Bill at Rangitikei. The' Wariganui horse was red-hot, but after going six furlongs he dropped right out of the contest and eventually finished "absolutely." That is not "Bill's" true form, and probably the Wanganui meeting may see a marvellous chang'e come over the scene. The idea of naming youngsters after their progenitors is not a bad one, but like everything else it becomes an abomination when carried to excess. Amongst the Soujts engaged a/fc Avondale are:—King Soult, Princess Soult, General Soult, Admiral Soult, Captain Soult, Lieutenant Soult, and Flying Soult. .These are only a few of them, and the constant reiteration of the Soult name is likely to confuse one. The big army of punters who called for St. Toney in the Maiden at Bulls were on a wonderfully good wicket. The "standing order" can fly for a few furlongs, and he leaves the barrier like a flash. Willie Young hopped the St. Clements gelding out first and he was never headed. Eastwind made a big effort to get up in the straight, but the Hawera horse was much too slick. Euroco ran into third placeman improvement on his poor showing at the Wanganui Hunt Club meeting. The son of Euroclydon has not been long in training, and should turn out a fair performer. The Rangitikei Steeplechase saw two alleged good 'crOss' country horses well beaten. On past performances the public ,could hardly go beyond Lovell and Sir Lethe, and that pair carried the bulk of the money invested. The favourite made the pace a merry one for over a mile and a half and then hung out signals of distress. Nogi, who 'scored in the Hack steeplechase at Marton, ran light away from the field in the last round, and just when Sir Lethe's backers were - beginning to console themselves with the thought of second dividend, Mpunt Cook -came through with a good run and 'tOok second money, making the defeatmore disastrous. Lovell .ran off at tlie last jump.. , i | Woolloomooloo, Bulhvorth and Seaton Dale arrived safely at Sydney, and have i been put into training..right away. I The right kind of. .horse to own! i Bayardo won in stakes alone, up to July 1 29 th, the tidy sum of £44,534. One of the veterans engaged at Avondale to-day is Lady 'French. The daughter of Soult has been amongst the aged division fojr some time now. California will probably be ridden by | Hector Gray in the Avondale Cup, and W. Young will pilot North . East. No less than thirty-three horses have paid up for the. Maiden at Avondale. If Deeley rides Master Wairiki that horse will just about go out favourite. Blue Garments is galloping well and should do well this season. There has been a strong run on Coromandel for . the Avondale Cup the last few days. Somebody must be 'bursting with information. I Aucklanders reckon that Poietiers is ' going to be the horse of the season, ana his admirers do not think the New Zealand Cup will be beyond him. As long as the earth spins round there will be someone whispering "morals." Amongst the horses engaged in the !Camellia Stakes at Rosehill to-day are: —Equitas, Gold Lace, Mundic, Effort and Golden Slipper. Valentine was well supported by Ms party for the last race at Bulls, but had no chance with The Native, who scored in the eaiest possible fashion and paid a handsome price. Apparently when a sprinter is put over sticks the public imagine lie loses his pace or something, •but the rate at which; they fly the ridiculously small fences at present shows that the t pace is on all the way. Talking of fast times. The Ashburton course is remarkably fast. Tyrant won the First Hurdles, a mile and a-half, in 2min 48sec. Moderate horses covered five furlongs in lmin 1 2-ssec; six furlongs in lmin 14sec; seven in lmin 28 4-ssec; a mile and a distance in lmin 53 2-ssec, and so on. That is something like travelling. . St. Felix and The Native* .were double winners at Bulls. The former scored in the principal event each day, and it is quite evident that the Porirua horse will he a greatly improved one this sear son. Maku's form over the big fences at Marton and at Bulls was a great disappointment to his connections. The big fellow jumps too big at present. St. Lumsden is no marvel, and at present appears-to be in need of a spell. Waitapu has-only 9.3 in the Open Hurdle race at Hastings. Mediterranean is still running seconds —four to date. Perhaps the long name is keeping the neddy back!
