HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In the House of Representative this evening the Hutt Railway Bill was reportedfrom committee. The Government Railways Amendment Bill was taken in committee. A new clause was inserted by the Minister having the effect of raising the rate of wages paid to iro» machinists and to that paid to wood machinists. Replying to Mr. Hogan, who urged that men doing work of the first grade, but not so classified, should be paid accordingly, Mr. Millar said that theoretically this would he right, but the cost of putting it into -effect would be very great. He would,.however, look into the matter and see what cbuld be done. The clause was agreed to and the Bill was reported with amendments. IMMIGRATION RESTRICTION. The Immigration Restriction Bill wa» taken in committee. Mr. Buddo moved to substitute the word "person" for Chinese in clause 5, dealing with the regulations under which Chinese are allowed to land. Replying to Mr. Allen, the Minister said an amendment was necfessary in aider to allow Asiatic tourists, other than Chinese, to land without paying the poll tax. . Mr. Allen considered the clause as amended opened the door too wide. Mr. Buddo said the intention of the clause, as amended, was to allow tourists, merchants and students who could not write tfaie European language, to land, provided they had credentials guaranteeing their bona fides.
