A STREET FATALITY.

MAORI KILLED IN A COLLISION. A..Maori named Neha Tamangare, more familiarly known as Neha, died at- the hospital shortly before midnight on Tuesday as the result of a collision in Devon street east, near Te Henui bridge. Neha, who was about 56 years old, had 'been in New Plymouth during the day, and it is alleged that he had imbibed intoxicating liquoTS a bit freely. He could look after himself \ all right when he took his horse and gig out of the livery stable at about 3 o'clock, but he was knocking aibout town for nearly a couple of hours after that. When he left town he was whipping his hoi'se Severely, and the animal soon broke into a stride that robbed the Maori of his control. Just on the Fitzroy side of Te Henui bridge he tried to pass between a gig driven by Mr. J. E. Fabian in the same direction and an express, but possibly the liquor rendered his eyesight defective, and he collided with Mr. Fabian's gig, in which were two ladies. This vehicle was not upset, but the native's gig was capsized and badly smashed. Neha was thrown out, and his horse freed itself. The impact and the horse frightened Mr. Fabian's horse, which became unmanageable, and it plunged and backed into the side of the road. As it did so the gig wheels passed over the upper part of the Maori's prostrate body, and the horse trod on him.j Mr. Fabian's horse was at length con-| trolled, and no injuries were caused to the ladies, who had jumped out of the gig, or to Mr. Fabian. Dr. Home, who, was motoring into town, rendered assistance to the unconscious Neha, who had received severe injuries to the head and chest, and the native was then eonr veyecl to the hospital in the express. At the hospital he died shortly before midnight. No inquest will be held, as the coroner is satisfied as to the cause of death.
