CHARGES AGAINST BOWRON BROS.
FURTHER CONVICTIONS. By Telegraph.—Fress Association. Ghristchurch. Wednesday. The third case against Bowron Bros, was that of having wilfully made a false return of income tax for the ten months ending July, 1907. Defendants claimed' to have made a loss of £5114, but later it was found, according to the prosecution, there had been a net income of £8757, making a discrepancy of nearly £14,000. For the defence it was urged that the preparation of the return, was left to an accountant,' who considered it unfair to treat consignments as sales and had reduced the sales item by £20,000. Mr. Bishop, S.M., said there could not be a shadow of doubt that a false return had been made within the meaning of the Act, and defendants would be convicted and in yesterday's case fined £2O arid in to-day's £lO, with three times the amount of tax evaded in each case. This amount will be assessed on Friday.
