CRICKET.
new Plymouth club. The annual report of the New Plymouth Cricket Club to be submitted to the meeting this evening is as follows: — "In presenting its annual report at the last general meeting of the club your committee had to mention the fact that your two senior teams were bracketed last in the Thursday competition. On the present occasion they are glad to be in a position to state! that your "Wanderers " team was prac-1 tically in the lead with Carrington Road! Club, when the lateness of the season 1 made it essential that the competition! should be closed before a definite result' could be obtained. At this point, each team had an unbeaten record, save that each had lost a match to the other.! Your "Rovers" team, with an equal! number of wins and losses, occupied , third place, a great improvement on the* previous season's performances. Your ! junior team, however, had a bad run 01, luck, ending the season without a win. to their credit. Owing to so few members being available for Saturday play no team was entered for the Saturday | competition. The decision of the legal I profession to close their offices on Saturdays is going to haye far-reaching effects on the club this season, as no less than six senior players are affected thereby. Mr. J. B. Jack, who captained the '"Wanderers" team for the two previous seasons, has left the district. He will be much missed 'both by the club and in cricket circles generally. Briefly, owing to the heavy expenditure of money on the Western Park, the finances of the club do not show a credit balance; on the other hand, it is satisfactory to note that there is no debit, while there is about £ls of material in hand.
In Western Park it was decided to lay down three wickets, and a truck of soil was obtained from Longburn. As tihe work proceeded it became manifest that if the Park was to be used permanently for cricket a good deal of money would , require to 'be expended first of all in levelling and properly grassing the playing field. This, of course, the club were unable to undertake, so what work was done was con-1 fined to the pitches in an endeavor to make them playable after Christmas, but even this was only accomplished with the aid of matting. A sum of £8 was expended on the work, £6 9s 01, which sum was spent on the soil and lor labour. In view of these circumstances, your committee has decided to make no recommendation to you in rejgard to grounds for the coming season. The thanks of the club are due to Mr. H. J. (Price, who generously put his rooms at the disposal of the committee, which met there on six occasions.
