THE HUIA EXTINCT.

MR. STEAD'S EXPLORATIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Tuesday. Mr. Edgar Stead has returned from his second search for huias unsuccessful. Not a bird vras heard or seen. The party crossed the Rangitikei eleven miles from Moawhango, and travelled along the south-west side of Mount Aorangi, cutting their own track. They were in the bush ten days, but could only penetrate four miles. No information could be got frtfm s«btlers or maps as to the topography of tbe land,-and this increased their difficulties. Huiag were plentful in the district a few years ago, and Mr. Stead still thinks they are as likely to be found there as elsewhere. He hopes to make another attempt in March or April, and take another route, which he could not do this time on account of rain and snow.
