MAORI SHEARERS. Hastings, September 12. About forty Maori shearers met at Moteo pah yesterday, and Messrs. Hawkins and M'Rae explained the position of the Moaris in n.-pe.-t to the shearing dispute. A resolution was carried unanimously that those present pledge themselves not to shear ior less than £1 per hundred and found. Marmaduke Dove Wilson was arrested this morning on a charge of bigamy and remanded for a week to enable wit- | nesses to be brought from Wellington. ; The allegation is that prisoner had a | wife in Nelson, where he went through the form of marriage with Harriet Louisa Dove, who received fatal injuries in George Street, Dunedin, a few weeks ago by being knocked down by a gig. HARNESSING WAIROA FALLS. ■ Wellington, Monday. | A deputation from Whangarei waited upon the Premier to-day to urge that the Government should proceed with harnessing the Wairoa Falls for the purpose of generating electricity for the supply of Whangarei and Dargaville. The cost of the scheme was estimated at £57,000, and the revenue was calculated at about £2OOO a year. Sir Joseph Ward said he could not give a definite reply until legislation on the subject had been passed. It was not intended to allow water power to be utilised privately. As soon as the Government had authority it would lay down a scheme for expenditure of half a. Miillion a year, making reasonable provision for expenditure in all parts of the country.
