(From Our Own Correspondent.) A3 a wind-up to a most successful I gathering—the ploughing competition—the dinner tendered to competitors and others, held on Thursday evening at Mr. | Kerr's hotel, was a most enjoyable one. i A splendid spread was provided by the 'host. After dinner the health of "The King" was toasted. Prizes were then) distributed as follows: —Double Furrow 1 and Best Turn-out: Ist, Mr.. R. Tate, £0 15s, half a ton of coal, pair of opera glasses and bag of sugar; 2nd, Mr. W. Terrill, £2 10s and a tobacco pouch; 3rd, Mr. C. Jennins, £1 10s. Single Furrow. Ist, Mr. E. Bassett, £4 10s, half ton manure, trophy valued 7s 6d; 2nd, A. D. Beauchamp, £2 and box of tea; 3rd, H. H. Giddy, £1 15s. Boys: W. Rook, £3 and pair of spurs. The chairman then proposed the toast of "The Successful Competitors," to which Mr. R. Tate and Mr. W. Wilkes (on behalf of Mr. E. Bassett) replied. In a few brief words Mr. G. Tate proposed "Commercial Interests." Messrs. W. H. Nosworthy and W. Wilkes replying. Mr. R. Tate proposed "The Judges," to which Messrs. J. D. Mitchell and G. V. Tate replied, both gentlemen covering portions of the work done in the induing; of turn-outs and ploughing. The toast of "The Farming Community" was proposed by Mr. J. George (who. by the way, was the first to .suajaiest the holding of a ploughing competition), and responded to b" Messrs. W. Birdlin.g and -T. Whitehead. "Old Competitors" was proposed Mr. T. Buchanan and responded to bv Messrs. G. V. Tate »n! G. H. Samp=on. both of whore "i-n- reminiscent of the days of 'C' n . wl-iMt the'- were in their prime, and the hitter gentleman, who had not i touched a plough for years and had not before handled the team used in the competition, said he would, should health permit, be a competitor at the '.next annual match. In replying, Mr. J. Ratte'ib'.n-'. (■''•nirman. traversed the | Society's work from its inception a verv short time back, and said that Mr. J. j George was responsible for the birth of the Association, that. Mr. W. Birdlin, ! without demur, granted them the use of his paddock, and that the business people of the town recognised the fact that town and comitrv must pull together, and gave their very hearty support to i finance the contest. The chairman also I the Association, that Mr. W. Birdlinc. I and also that of "Our Host." both of [ whom responded. During evening songs ami recitations were given by Messrs. Farmer, J. George, G. N. Skelton, J. Thornley, J. D. Mitchell. J. Mitchell, E. V. Tate, A. Lash, (Sampson, Wilkes, and Mcßeth. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" brought a most pleasant evening to a close. The Society will without doubt come out with a credit balance.
The Bowling Club's euchre party has been fixed for" September 13. Mr. G. V. Tate presents a handsome teapot as first prize for the ladies.
The first annual ball of the North Taranaki Mounted Rifles is set down for September 22. The Waitara Harbor Board's usual monthly meeting was due last evening. Messrs. TTatrick and Co.'s new store is being pushed on rapidly. All the piles are down and most of the framework is in position.
