DISTRICT NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondents.) I WAIONGONA. A smoke concert was held on Monday night by the male members of the Debating Society. Mr. R. ICilpatrick occupied the chair, and the following toasts were proposed and duly honoured:—"The King," "Our Society," "The Ladies," "The Navy and Army," "Absent Friends," "The New Creamery," "The Dairying Industry." Songs and recitations were given during the evening by various members. The, function was brought to a close at II p.m. by singing the National Anthem. After balancing accounts there is a substantial balance in hand, most of which will be devoted to the Children's Excursion Fund, and the rest will be carried oi to form a small sushis next year. Messrs. H. and E.'Clough are taking over Atkinson's lower farm, where they intend milking on shares during the coming season. EGMONT VILLAGE. On Tuesday last a euchre party and dance was held under the supervision of the Hall Improvement Committee. There was a fair attendance. The prizes were won by—Ladies', Miss M. Harvey (umbrella) 1, Miss B. Hill (salad bowl) 2; gentlemen's, L. James (ink-stand) 1, W. E. Orr (poclcet book) 2.. After the cards, dancing was kept up till about 1.30 a.m. Mr. R. G. Marsh supplied excellent music. During the evening supper was' handed round. Mr. E. Dewhirst acted as M.C. As the ibusy season is now coming on it is not probable that many, more of these functions, which have been so suc-| cessfullv run bv the Hall Improvement | Committee during tHe winter; will foe held. 1 Oh Thursday evening a large number of members'of'the Debating Society assembled in the hall, the evening being {levotecl to written narratives of personal experiences. On a vote being taken, Mr. lonian's was declared the most meritorious' effort. Readings, recitations, etc., from Shakespeare, is the programme for next meeting. « On Saturday night, a meeting convened for the purpose of forming a boxing school at Eganont Village was well attended, Mr. Xnmkn occupied the chair. It was decided that a clM>, styled the "Egmomt Amateur Boxing Club," foe formed. The following officers were then elected:—President, Mr. A, Morton; vice-presidents, Messrs F. Schicker (Kaimiro), A. Chard (Upland road) and G. F. Dewhirst (Egmont Village): secretary and treasurer, ,Mr. E. Dewhirst. The secretary was instructed to call a meetin? for Saturday next for the purpose of electing a committee and drawing ui rules. A vote, of thanks to Mr. Inmani for presiding concluded the meeting. Although it is late in the vear to start boxing, local interest (especially among the younger generation i is very keen, and it is the intention to ?et troing .n.t on"p so as .to make str-e of having definite to go on at the foeginning of next season.
