SPORTING MASTER SOULT'S HEALTH. Br Cahie.—Pies* Association.—Copyright Received September 6, 8.45 p.m. Sydney, September 6. Master Soult is making a rapid recovery. After exercising to-day, he walked -off the course apparently all right. He still remains in the Spring Stakes, the Craven and Randwick Plates and both cups. This is taken to mean that his trainer thinks little of the temporary stoppage of his preparation. Sea Blue remains in the Epsom Bubble. Cap and Blue Book are scratched for the Metropolitan.

TURF TOPICS.
(By "Moturoa.") Marton races to-day! It sounds like spring. Another year has flown and we are still on top; still picling winners as of yore. The Marton annual meeting leads off the season, as far as the North Island is concerned, as the first meeting of any account in the racing year. It is always a popular one with Taranaki owners, and it is certainly productive of interesting racing. Thus it is that Turf followers look surprised when "Marton again" is mentioned. It seems to say, "You're another year older, old man, and you're still following the gee-gees." Ah well, we are no better than we ought to be, but we're getting up in years. We'll soon be spinning fairies about the wonderful things we saw when we were in our prime—if we ever Had a prime. Winners at Levin last week will be required to put up- penalties to-day—-71b for one win- 101b for two or more. (Reduction for taking a quantity, of course.) Horses affected bv this ruling are:—Shorts Handicap: "Multiple 8.7 (9.0); Kareroa 7.10 (8-3). Trial Hurdles: Rosegrove 9.4 (9.11). Electric Handicap: Vibration 7.1-2 (8.5), Nukuhau 7.11 (8.4), Turnn 7.0 (7.7). Marton Handicap: Sir Frisco 8.13 (9.13). Tutaenui Welter: Mallett 7.13 (8.6), Torpoint 7.7 ,(8.7). Bismarck was only given one run at Levin, in the Cup. ' With only 6.12 in the sadd'e it might reasonably be ex-j pected that, the bay son of Uhlan would be with the leaders after the first few furlongs, but he is a sluggish mover, and midget horsemen do not seem to be able to stir him up sufficiently to get him within striking distance ■M' the leaders before the turn is reached. Last into the straight on Thursday he rattled through a beaten field in rare style, and was catching Sir Frisco fast at the finish. But the finishing post came too soon. If somebody had rooted it up or put it in their pocket until another round had been traversed, Bismarck might have won. But that sort of racing only obtains on Jack Maori's courses. No one would begrudge "Paddv" a win, for he has persevered with Bismarck as few other trainers would have done. It is to be hoped that his luck will take a turn shortly. Sir Frisco was the only one of the four New Zealand Cup candidates to show to advantage in the heavy going at the Horrid-whenua meeting, and bis performances were no recommendation for a two-mile race. Roosevelt is capable of considerable improvement before November, but Gold Battery and St. Lumsden are not class enough for good company.
Mallet had the services of Hector Gray in the Hack Welter on Thursday, but ran very unkindly. With Deelev aboard in the Moutere Handicap next day. he was allowed to ran along behind the field to the straight, and then came throught with a fine run, settling St. Lumsden easily in the last fifty yards. The "dark green and amber" jacket has not been up on many winners
lately, but when in the mood Mallet has condition enough on him to win many good races. I Kareroa was landed in the pink of I condition' at Levin, and this horse seems ] to have come on a lot since last we I saw him—at the Wanganui meeting. In' the Park Stakes he made most of the I running in the early stages, but nothing had a chance with Multiple at the' weights. Kareroa had more followers in the Levin Handicap on Friday, the five-furlong course being considered more to his liking. When the tapes flew up Naumai and Kareroa dashed off first, the former showing the way to the straight. The top-weight was done with below the distance, and Kareroa came on in good style and won comfortably from Ascalon and Multiple, who finished almost abreast. The winner was ridden by L. Nodder, who now trains for Mr. L. Bremer at Waverley. Shuja, now trained by F. Tilley at Fordell, is galloping nicely, and will probably make his re-appearance in the Tutaenui Welter this afternoon. With 9.13 up, Mr. G. Morse has taken no chances with the erstwhile Taranaki horse.
Vibration won at Levin, just getting home by a nose. Some people are inclined to be-little the victory, but it is worthy of notice that young Meagher, who rode the colt, lost his stirrup-irons at the start, and both rider and horse were greatly handicapped. That they got home first under the circumstances was marvellous. Mr. Bert Russel was in Wanganui at the Hunt Club meeting, and while there purchased from Mr. G. F. Moore the Eurocyldon—Puss gelding for 80 so vs. This horse is a fine jumper, and looks up to weight carrying. He claims halfbrotherhood with Sammy and Catapult, and should turn out one of the useful sort. One of the most promising of the new batch of stake-earners is Torpoint, a four-year-old gelding by Torpedo. Trainer F. Claremont secured him for one of his clients for a moderate outlay of 42 guineas, and he has already paid his way. In both his races at the Horowhenua meeting he scored comfortably, and if the weight-adjusters give him a chance he should win again. The veteran Bourrasque was running i on strongly at the end of the Cup race on Thursday, and the bay gelding is not done with yet. If he keeps sound—and the soft going should give him every chance—he will not be long in picking up a stake for Mr. L. Pascal. Sardonyx is back to form again, and is jumping better than ever. Great interest, amongst hunting folk especially, will be taken in his meeting with Oakley in the Hunt Club Cup this afternoon. Jenkins and Deeley were riding well last week, each scoring three wins at Levin. They fought out a neck and neck battle on Moreykoff and iPerceler in the .Hack Scurry, Deeley's mount landing the stake by the narrowest of margins only. Little was said of' the Aucklander's riding, but had Jenkins reversed positions with his rival how the kow-tow pen-pushers of the Wellington province would have screamed about "horsemanship!" They are wedded to "Jenks."
Master Sylvia figures in the Maiden at Marton, and if started may be depended upon to run a good race. The crowd up against Mr. J. Smith's horse includes many Tair sprinters, and he will be asked to travel fast if he is to run prominently. The Porirua jumper" Hawick was well supported at Horowhenua, but did not fence as well as usual, and knocked himself about somewhat. On a firmer track the brown gelding may do better, and he will only have to reproduce his Riccarton form (where he wan a twelve furlong flat race in 2min 51 l-ssec with 12st 51b up) to shake things up among3t the hack hurdlers. St. Toney and Tarn Glen are in good nick and will be amongst the runners at Marton. The Doncaster St. Leger will be lun in England to-day'. Although he won a double at Levin, Sir Frisoo escaped a penalty for the New Zealand Cup. It transpires that Roosevelt and John did not accept for the New Zealand Cup through their owner overlooking the date of closing of acceptances. People will leave things till the last moment! Kareroa won so easily af Horowhenua that he must surely command a big following in his next few starts. He is a smart beginner and can go a bit for five furlongs. Perceler, who won the Hack Scurry after a gruelling battle with Moreykoff, is a 4 year-old chesnut gelding by Gold Reef—Gold Carp. It was his second time under silk, and he finished very straight under the flail. Mr. J. R. McDonald made a lucky, purchase when he secured Te Ru for fifty guineas the other day. The horse made his first public appearance over the sticks at Levin, and jumped grandly, nothing else having a chance with him. Te Ru has great pace and promises to do big things this season. Aberbrothock has broken down, and will be given an extended spell.- , Waikaraka is reported to be getting o'-pr the ground in great style, and "Mr. Narellc" hopes to lead in a winner very soon. With 10.10 asainst his name, Paritntu must he accounted well treated in Ifie Handicap Hurdles at Avondale.
