COUNTY AFFAIRS.

■ To. the Editor. Sir,—May I crave a few lines of your space in which to reply to the so-called "straight talk" from Councillor Allanson at the County Council meeting.. It is all very well (or a new-comer like the Rev. Mr. Allanson to- get up on his hind, legs and "throw off" at his fellowcouncillors,; but it must be remembered that whereas this talking has been for years the reverend gentleman's own particular forte and living, many of the men to whom he was talking and whom he described as old women, have made roads themselves in the pioneering days. Talk is cheap, but it takes money to pay engineers; and if the Rev. Allanson will enquire into the history of some recent county undertakings down the coast he may see cause to alter his idea of the value of these professional men that he wants to put over the heads of our foremen—men that we know, and who can be reckoned to know their business.. The Council lately has given too much attention to the men who haven't had roadwork experience, and it is about time that the old members put down a big foot upon the waste of time and high-falutin ideas that the new men want to put' into practice. I for one object to old respected councillors being dubbed a set of old women, and I am sure most of vour readers will agree with me.—l am, etc., WAIREKA.
