FORESTRY.

A.0.F., COURT TARANAKI. A special summoned meeting of the members of this Court was held on Wednesday last. The balance sheet for the quarter was read, which disclosed that the Court had 115 members, with total fundg amounting to £4113 17s 9d. The meeting was called more particularly to deal with the question of the surplus funds as disclosed in the last Government valuation of the Court, w>ich showed a surplus of over £l2 per member. The secretary stated that the financial position should be exceedingly gratifying to members, and that there was only one other Court in the Dominion with a larger surplus. He also stated that there was one larg9 friendly society in New Zealand that had not one single lodge financially sound. The following excerpt from the Regis-trar-General's last valuation was read: —"The sickness experienced was 701 weeks, costing £SBB. whilst the amount expected by valuation tables was 1223 weeks, costing £657. There were 8 deaths as against 6 expected by the tables. The mean rate of interest earned was 4.73 per cent., a very good return. The result of the valuation is a surplus of £1238, as against £761 at the previous valuation. The Court has given evidence of good management during the last twenty years or so, and this has very materially assisted in producing the good results now shown." The secretary stated that for a very long time past he had been endeavouring to obtain some greater benefit for members out of this surplus. The registrar had been good enough to prepare and forward to the Court a list of! each individual member's interest in the] surplus, the highest' personal interest j being £2l 17s. This, together with the ftineral benefit of £35 granted by the District Court, would make a total of £56 17s. The total amount of the reversionary benefits amounts to £ll9B 6s. The members present expressed their gratification at the results of the valuation and their appreciation of the efforts of the secretary, Mr. E. H. Tribe. A vote of thanks was passed to the registrar and actuary of friendly societies for the time and trouble taken in connection with this matter. .
