NEW SOUTH WALES TELEPHONE SYSTEM. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Received September 2, 10.30 p.m. Sydney, Last Night. The telephone authorities report that the new system has resulted in a considerable reduction in the number of calls. A few subscribers have asked to be disconnected.
CAPTAIN SCOTT'S EXPEDITION. Eeceived September 2. 10.30 p.m. Melbourne, Last Night. I In the House of Representatives, in reply to a question whether the Government would consider the expedience of voting a sum to assist the Scott Antarctic expedition, Mr. Fisher said the Government had considered the matter and made up its mind. He would not promise to re-open the question. WHEN WAR COMES. Received September 2, 10.30 p.m. Melbourne, Last Night. A Melbourne deputation, representing the Women's Political Crusade, asked the Minister of Defence to store food to avoid starvation in war time. Mr. Pearce replied that Australia, being a food-producing country, was not in the same danger as European food-importing countries. As a matter of policy, the Federal Government might deem it advisable to take the matter up. He promised to obtain a report from the military authorities.
