.Owing to the Koonya .being delayed on the West Coast her usual run is to be taken up by the Taviuni, which leaves Dunedin on Friday. The Taviuni, it will be remembered, was stranded on the beach near Westport and after a great, amount of trouble, which necessitated the cutting of the breiaikwater, the vessel was re-launched and towed to Port Chalmers, this tow being one of the longest' successfully accomplished on this coast by a tug-boat. A'long rest for the recovered steamer followed at the Port Chalmers wharves. Recently a collier was required, and she was chosen, a start being made to convert a deal of her 'passenger space into coal accommodation. The repairs, etc., to the vessel, it is reported, were a costly item to the owners of the Red Funnel fleet, and in the end cost more than her original cost. The Taviuni, which makes her first trip to this port, is a vessel of 1425 tons gross register and I'ooo-i.h.p. THE ROSAMOND. The Rosamond is due from Wellington and Nelson to-day. She will .bring about 300 tons of car;?o, including a number of piles. After discharging she leaves for Onehunga, returning on Saturday. PETONE'S NARROW ESCAPE. Shortly after 3.30 o'clock on Sunday the Blackball Coal Company's steamer Petone, 707 tons, Captain W. M. Muir, reached Onehunga, and iberthed safely, after a very narrow escape from ibeing driven orr to the bank off the end of the wharf (says Monday's Auckland Herald). The Petone had a part cargo of coal on board from Greymouth and New Plymouth. Captain Muir reports that a heavy northerly wind was experienced at New Plymouth on Friday n/glit, but it went round to the south-west on Saturday, at four p.in. of which day he sailed for Ottehunga. Throughout* 'Saturday night a wicked westerly gale prevailed, with a big sea running. On Sunday morning the Petone arrived off the Manukau bar, which was in a most turbulent condition, and it was not until 10 o'clock .that the passage inwards was essayed. The bar at this time was ibreaiking for miles out, and Captain Muir states that he felt like going back, for big seas were breaking over jthe vessel. However, the main channel was negotiated I safely, and the. steamer arrived as above. In his experience Captain Muir does not recollect ever seeing the bar so bad as it was on 'Sunday.' On the bridge of the Petone could ibe seen sand that had been dashed over with the waves.
