DISTRICT NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondents.), RAHiOTU. The Benedicts' Ball, which had bwa eagerly looked forward to for some weeks, eventuated on Friday evening and proved highly successful, ft could not possibly have done otherwise, when the large committee, of which Mr. Willcox j was chairman and Mr. L. Fischer secre- ' tary, were determined that it should ' eclipse every previous function. It was 1 the first ball the ibcncdicts had given in I'a.hotu, and those present hope the next will soon take place. There were about 350 present, and all were unanimous in their praise of the arrangements. The I hall had been tastefully decorated, whilst the stage was curtained off and trans- ; formed into a drawing room. The floor j was in perfect order, and excellent music I was provided by Messrs Knowles (piano), ■ Nichol (cornet), Duncan and Miss Cross , (violins), so that the dancers' wants were fully catered for. As for the supper—- | well, the benedicts luid the advantage over the bachelors, in that they had j wives to assist them to prepare this, and I a bountiful feast was the result. There j ! were sucking p!<v, turkey, fowl, duck, I goose, ham, tongue, trifles, jellies, and other delicacies, and the usual supper rush was absent as the arrangements made were that the hungry could adjourn to the supper room any time after 9 p.m., a privilege taken full advantage of. The benedicts in attendance waited on their guests as to the manner 'born. During the evening extras were played by Mrs. Harrison, Messrs Maunder and C. Feaver. Messrs A. F. Chapman, J. A. Colmer and C. Penwarden were assiduous in their attention to the visitors. Mr. Vinc&is having a nice cottage built on the Kahui road. This will add to the appearance of our township. Mr. Ward has the contract.
The timber for kerbing for footpaths is now on the ground, so that our footpaths should soon be an accomplished fact. (Mr. Ohas. Jefferies, who has been ill in 'New Plymouth for some time, is now able to get about, and we hope ere long to see him out this way. Cows are now coming in fast, and we will soon be in full swing for another season. Our factory is now running daily. Butter is at present manufactured and will ibe for some time to allow of farmers feeding their new calves on skim milk. In fact, if the sensational prices, which it is rumored are being offered for butter, materialise, it is questionable if it will pay to majke cheese, also considering the enhanced value of calves. .
WAREA. | The fifth euchre party in aid of thehall funds was held on Wednesday last, there being a fair attendance. Cards were played until about ten o'clock, when twelve games had been finished.
