'Mr. J. Colvin, M.P. for Buller, who lias been elected Chairman of Committees of the House of Representatives, is a native of County Donegal, Ireland, where he was born in 1844. When seventeen years of age he went to Australia, landing in Melbourne in 1861. He was goldmining at Creswick Creek and at Daylesford, and in 1862 was attracted to the Otago goldfields. Mr. Colvin proceeded to Dunstan, and later to the Wakatipu, afterwards removing to Tnvercargill. Subsequently he went to the Wakamarina, and then to Hokitika and* the Grey Valley. In 1861, when the gold discovery at the Buller caused another stir among the miners, Ak Colvin settled at Addison's Flat, and in 1872 started a storekeeping business at Westport. In 1885 he was elected to the Buller County Council, on which he served for six years. He was elected chairman of the Westport (Haiibor Board, in 1890. He occupied a seat on the 'Nelson Education Board in 1894, and was Mayor of Westport from 1898 to 1899. He defeated Mr. P. J. O'Regan for the Buller seat in 1899, and has sat in Parliament since that date. 'He was appointed senior Government Wihip in 1006.
