LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Liedertafel at its last meeting decided to recommend the amalgamated Liedertafel-Liederkranz Societies to commence practising the oratorio "Elijah'" for production at some future time. A meeting of the committee of the Veterans' Association set up in connection with the application to have the word '\Mahoetahi" inscribed on the eol-1 ours of the Taranaki Rifles will be held this afternoon. "Sydney is a drink-cursed city of hoteTk and wine shops. It is remarkaible what a number of fish and! fruit shops have the right to sell wine." These are views of the Rev. C. E. iScfoafer, of Broken Hill, who has been conducting a no-license campaign. (He expressed the opinion that no j license was going ahead like a whirlwind. A paheka with three broken toes engaged a Maori in pugilistic combat yesterday afternoon. The encounter took place in Currie lane, and after some vigorous exchanges the Maori was thrown on his back in the ditch. Another native chimed in., and commenced to handle the white man. But was called j off by a spectator. The' fight was concluded in private. for influenza take Woods' Great 1 p■■flTmint Curt. Never fai's,. Is od, 2s ft; l .

The Taranaki County Council's Application for a loan of £IOO, being ten per cent, on the Eliot road loan, has been provisionally approved. The Fitzrov beach improvement committee put in a useful afternoon's work on Thursday, when a good number of trees were planted, and a new path opened, on account of the first one having to be abandoned. A bathing shed is talked of, but the busy working bees cannot do this without assistance. It is thought, however, that the necessary subscriptions will be forthcoming.

Weasels originally introduced into the district to combat the rabbit pest are | threatening now (says the Oamaru Mail) j to become a pest as great as themselves.' Several Artlgowan settlers have had their fowlyards visited lately, with disastrous results. Recently a farmer found the nest of two weasels, and, scattered round the edge of it, he counted the remains of 24 liens' eggs. The term "blow-out," not unknown at tea meetings and socials, has been appropriated by the petroleum people. jWhen Mr. 0. Carter, who is chairman of the Taranaki (Petroleum Company, took the chair at the Reclnvbites' function on Thursday evening, one of the audience remarked, "Now for a blowout." Mr. Carter's chance came later} when the refreshments were announced. ''Now is our friend's opportunity for a blow-out," lie said, and the interjcctor, [blushed furiously.

The Wellington syndicate who are behind the Beech aeroplane, a model of which was exhibited in Wellington a few weeks ago, are in receipt of an offer from Sydney to take over the bulk of the interest in the machine, on terms likely to 'be favorably considered. If these are accepted by the syndicate, business matters connected with the Beech aeroplane will be attended to in Sydney, the Wellington backers still retaining a considerable interest in the invention, which has made an impression on those interested in aviation in Australia. We have received frequent requests for an interpretation of the words "Liedertafel," Liederkranz," and "Liedcrspiel," which are the titles of the singing societies recently organised in New Plymouth. Mr. C. H. Anderson, the conductor of the societies, kindly hands us the following definitions:—Liedercyhlus: (Ger), a cycle, a series of songs; Liederkrauz : n choral society; a "wreath," or series of songs; Lieder-

spiel: a vaudeville, a, dramatic piece interspersed with light, easily comprehensible music—songs, duets, choruses, etc.; Liedertafcl: a singing society of men, who endeavour to construe the enjoyment of the pleasure of music, society, and perhaps the palate, too; Krischend: (Ger), shrieking, screeching. A genuine tip to smokers is communicated to an exchange. Take a small pellet of the narrow wood fibre, or shavings, used for packing small articles of jewellery, etc., roll a few strands into a ■ball (say three-eighths of an inch or thereabouts), press down with a pencil, then fill in the tobacco above it. This will be found to absorb not only all the juices, "but to filter all the dust from the consumed tobacco, so that the purified smoke reaches the mouth quite free from nicotine and dust; and, what is more, all the tdbacco is consumed, leaving nothing ibut the saturated fibre, and consequently no remnant of sodden tobacco to be thrown away. The dirtiest pipe will, after a few smokes, become clean and free from all offensive smell. The services in the Queen Street Church to-morrow will be conducted by the Rev. J. Nixon; in the morning at 11 a.m., and in the evening at 7 p.m. All seats free. —Advt.
