DISTRICT NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) . MIDHtRST. We have been'experiencing rather changeable- weather here lately, but the rain has again cleared off, and the last two or three days have been warm and dry. There have been a good many removals of settlers from the Denbigh road. Mr. Williams and family have gone, also several other families, and Mts. Stewart intends leaving in a few days 1 time. Other families, however, have taken thenplaces, in the persons of Mrs. Casey and family, and Mr. W. Moles, who have already ibeen talking an active part in the afiairs of the road. Last Friday evening a euchre tournament took place in the Denbigh School, the gentlemen's prize being won by Mr. W. Moles, and the ladies' 'by Miss Olansen. The attendance was not so good as usual, several of the usual players being away from, the road, but everyone had a very pleasant time. I 'j'; " „ 1g1.1L... OMATA, •••s»*'
Tilo*6 who attended tii.% Mil on Tuesday last and hoped to SpSsM an enjoyable evening were not disappointed. The room was well filled when the curtain rose, although not ! as crowded as it often is. Mr. E. B&yley occupied the chair, and Mr.' Pearson presided at the piano. Needleas t'O say, (both gentlemen performed ■their duties admirably. The programme from start to finish was well received iby the audience. Mr. Asher was m particularly good voice, and it is at all times a treat to hear him. Mrs. Cuttler delightd all with her songs, especially her rendering of "Killarney," which was, to my thinking, the gem of the evening. The Misses Gilbert never fail to please. Messrs. Putt and Lovell (purebred Africans, "own brothers to Johnson, vide the chairman) in all their items brought down the house and were vociterously encore! "A Job Lot," by Mr. Lovell, was exceptionally good., Now, one word for the children, who, when performers, ensure the success of any entertainment. They are so thomigh m earnest, so entirely pleased with themselves, that the feeling becomes contagious, and there was every cause foi it on Tuesday, for one and all were perfect in their parts. Mr. Meyenberg is to ibe congratulated on the happy manner in which he handles his scholars-no fuss no bother, no crowding or rushing, iust a quiet word of command heard only by those for whom it. is intended, but iknown to have been uttered by th? prompt, smiling oiljefdience given, aiul proving without a doubt that h eP° s " Lses not only the respect but the at fection of those under his care. The ollowing is the programme:-Piano duet, "Fairy Queen," Mrs. D. (Hooker a.nd Mrs. Pearson; action song, "Splashing Briny," children; 6ong, Nita Gihana, Mt Asher; duet, "I've wandered in Dreams," Misses Gilbert; coon song, "Yellow Girl," Mr. W. Putt; song, Killarney," Mrs. Cuttler; song. Everybody's Loved 'by Someone, children. (Interval). Piano duet, 'lreland, Mrs. I). Hooker and Mr. Pearson; eomic son", "Job .Lot," Mr. J. Lovell; song, Fourleafed Clover," Miss Gilbert; recitation, "Papa's Letter," children; song, _ The Litle Hero," Mr. Asher; song, 'Carnival, Mrs. Cuttler; farcical boxing exhibition, Messrs Putt and Lovell. . At the conclusion, "God Save the King was sung, and the room was cleared for dancing, which seemed to be thorough y enioved by all who participated in it. Half the proceeds of the entertainment So to be P given to the. school pic™ fund and half to the haJl-fouilding fund.
