The next card party, 1 "to be held in a. month's' time,; will bring -the series for the season.to a closed The Debating Society met on Monday for a newspaper evening. Speeches vere made by members on various' subjects,' and freely criticised. ■ The concert on. Friday will, practically bring the meetings to a close, for thjjs year. , Great interest is being taken,;m_.the' works connected wi.tJf our new creamery, and on Sunday afternoons reguiar wits of inspection #re paid by local residents. ; The cottage is now aim»si and the framework of the creamery'.wid, skim-milk reservoir are showing.,. * • MAKISTAWA. ' . ■ ■ " .; t, •, ' An extraordinary general meeting of the suppliers of the local- iaovuiy was held at the factory on Monday evening to consider the application of the 'settlers on-Durham Road West for the erection of a creamery. -Mir. Joe Brown occupied the chair and fully explained the proposal and its pros and ."clous.. Interest in the matter was w--wn i>y several shareholders m questions, etc, which were satisfactorily answered. Some speakers touched ou mio co-o^ra-/ tive principle of' helping one another, and in the end the proposal that a creamery be erected was put' and the ballot, resulted jn 34, votes for,, ,i 3 against. Several details are to be arranged (probably, finally fixed iby Saturday next), and I understand the erection of the buildings, etc., will »»c with forthwith. The erection of the, creamery will be of .great:. benefit tothe settlers interested,:and there-is no' doubt but that they havev a,>; good case in their favoujr: The number »fi cows, to r start with total close oni oo6,*nd there are a good number, of atfcesjav, parent not used for dairying,: but which no doubt will be. used for that'purpose by the erection of a creamery, ij vs almost a certainty that the numb'erVof cows in the near future will be very tuysiderably increased. A very large ,pors<»n of the supply,to the factory.cpme.sfrom Durham Road, and it goes without ••dying that as land becomes more \cleared and ploughed, the increased supply must necessarily caujse, greater/* improvements at the factory to cope with;it. This will now. be obviated by the erec-' tion of the creamery; the wear and tear of the road will, of course, be lessened, and will allow of more work bemg uone on the. farms. Taking all things, into consideration the Maketawa suppliers, as a whole, are, to be commended for the spirit they have shown an the matter. .. .. '", ' , '. I
Mr. Brown also drew attention to the benefits of, pasteurisation, and asked authority of, the .meetingsast° .insjtal ing one for cream Regard-, ing skim .milk, he< stated; ..they, had s ohe being. installed on trial Sor MS months. Mr. Mills ,(of Messrs. Mills and Spar r , row, produce^,merchants, of England) waited, on the directors 1 and was asked to give his .opinion as to the benefits of pasteurising 'the creain. This gentle- ( manV views were; very i "fa r voura'bly r re-. ceived, and..on a: show of hands. being taken,*.it was found that, the meeting, was unanimously in favour of a, pasteur- 1 iser 'being installed: A motion to thateffect, proposed by.Mr. Haslett and sec-j onded by Mr. Simpson, was "carried. The next improvements to the factory in the shape of a concrete floor and a thorough overhaul all round, adds much to the neat appearance and smooth, working of the' factory, and are sub-| stantial and appreciable .improvements that will result in time in,a saving of expenses. ' > I. The weather has lately; been anything' but pleasant, though at the same time is not in any way severe on the stock; I and it is a good "job, too, that, the water has been such a mild one considering the failure of the turnip crop.
