TITLE AND WEALTH.
A Paris paper reports (stated a cable message published in the Sydney Sun on the 9th inst.) that the Italian Royal family have withdrawn their objections to the marriage of the Duke of Abruzzl with .Miss Catherine Elklns, daughter of Mr. E. B. Elkins, the well-known United States Senator, and that an official announcement will shortly be made. The Duke of Abruzzi is a cousin of the King of Italy, and his engagement with Miss Elkins, whom he met while on a visit to Washington, was first announced towards the end of 1908. At the same time it was announced that Miss Elkins would receive a dowry of £200,000. As Senator Elkins would not hear of a morganatic marriage, under which his daughter's children could not claim their father's rank or his property, King Victor Emmanuel consented to accord the bride the position of a Royal princess. Subsequently a new obstacle presented itself, in the shape of the unconquerable opposition of the Queen Dowager and of the Duke and Duchess of Aosta, and finally ,the definite announcement was made that the match was "off." 'The Duke of Abruzzi (adds the Sun) is well remembered in Sydney, he having visited this city about five years ago. in the Italian cruiser Liguria. Both (here and in Melbourne the Duke attended a number of social functions, and he was afterwards reputed to be engaged to an Australian girl.
