DISTRICT NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondents.)
HILLSBOROUGH. The Waireka Minstrels paid a visit to our district on I'riday night, and gave us a very pleasant evening's amusement. Mr. Fred Asher undertook the part of interlocutor, and Messrs. W. Putt and J. Lovell were, respectively, "Tambo" and "Bones." Their jokes and funnyisms kept the audience in a .laughable mood. Songs were sung by the Misses Gilbert, who are youthful vocalists. Mrs. George contributed a solo creditably, and possesses a very sympathetic voice. Messrs. Asher and Meyenberg were in good voice, and were well received. The comic part of the concert was* left to the corner men, and they really did it well. A larger audience was expected, as the night was fine. The people were possibly saving themselves for the plain and fancy dress ball that comes off on Thursday night next, August 25. Arrangements have >been made for a finis to run. 'Excellent music will be provided by a very efficient orchestra, and the committee and helpers are anticipating ia very successful function. It will ibe a moonlight night, and the hall is only five miles from New IPJymouth. , J WAIiAEA ROAD.

Luke; song, Mr. Neiddy; song, Mrs. Openshaw (encored); song 3 Miss Turnbull; song, Mr. Hills (encored), and responded to by a quartette by Messrs. Hills, Openshaw, Thornley and Marsden. The jnumcal part of the programme over, Mr. Wells, of Brixton, was called upon to give the next item, the presenting to Mr. and Mrs. Giddy of a handsome silver tea pot and hot water jug, and to Miss Giddy an oak biscuit barrel, silver mounted, and silver cake basket. In doing so, Mr. Wells said that Mr. and Mrs. Giddy had, been residents.• of the district for over 40 years, and he could j well remember Mr. Giddy in the Maori.
war. He was a good soldier. Although) not an active public man, he always took ; an interest in all district functions. Asj for Mrs. Giddy, she was well-known as' the life of the'district in (lays gout, .7,' and was ever ready in time of need and;, sickness to lend a kindly hand. Miss!,! Giddy had ever been to'the fore in as-| : sisting at entertainments, etc. Mir. Giddy J 1 suitably acknowledged the gifts, after'l which "For they are jolly good fellows"|, was rn'ost heartily sung. Mr. Wells con-j eluded by asking* Mrs. Giddy to give- as |' a reminder of olden times one of her, favourite recitations, "ttichard and. Betty," which she gave in excellent style, and was loudly applauded. Mr. Dick! Giddy and Mrs. Holden gave one of; their favourite duets, which was loudly applauded. Supper was handed round' and dancing kept up till about 2.30 a.m. I almost forgot to mention the farce] on the programme, "That rascal Pat,"| it being portrayed with considerable success by Messrs.
