FOREST FIRES IN AMERICA.
HUNDRED SQUARE MILES ABLAZE,
[ GREAT LOSS OP LIFE. SEVERAL TOWS OVERWHELMED. By Cable.—Preas Association.—Copyright New York, August 22. A hundred square miles- of country is on fire in Idaho. Thirty persons have been burned to death at Wallace. There are a thousand refugees from Missoula. One hundred and eighty members of the .forestry service are missing. Four towns, including Taft, are deserted and are now burning. Fires in Western Montana are destroying many isolated settlements. Hundreds of settlers were overtaken in their beds, and are reaching tlie towns scantily clad. It is expected that the number of fatalities already recorded will be greatly augmented. The forest service men report that they have positive evidence that many fires in Oregon are of incendiary origin. A hundred have perished in Idaho., Half of Wallace is J eft standing, but there is a solid wall of fire sixty miles long, from Thompson to the boundary of the State of Idaho.
