DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondents.) RAHOTU. lA farewell social was tendered to Messrs Leng iand Iv. Langton, who are I leaving the district, on Wednesday evening. Mr. Leng has disposed of his farm to Mr. P. Cook, of Oaonui, and is leaving the district on account of the continued ill-health of his wife. Both Mr. Leng and Mr. Langton have been in t'he district for some years, and have been members of the iSehool Committee and also on the directorate of the Oaonui Co-operative Dairy Company. The number of old friends present on Wednesday evening at the social was .sufficient proof of the popularity of the gentlemen. The social was also intended to be a farewell to Miss Kl Cook, who had just been married and left during the afternoon for •Canterbury. Dancing was commenced about eight o'clock and kept up until the small hours, everything going smoothly and enjoyably. During the evening songs were contributed as follows: —"Asleep in the Deep," Mr. D. McClymont; '"The Veteran's Song," 'Mr. Mildenhall; ''Mo one knows the trouble," Mr. Taylor; "Poor John! (Pioor John!" Mr. Taylor; "Barney, take me home again," Mrs. C. 1 Sorrensen; recitation, "Betsy and I a.re | out and Betsy and I are in," Mr. | Strong Taylor. There was also stepj dancing by Master and Miss Rookes, who contributed a Highland Fling, and also 1a contribution by Master Henderson.

WAIONGOXA. The Debating Society held their usual weekly meeting on Monday evening, when humorous and instructive items were contributed by members. The meetings continue to gain popularity, especially among the younger generation. The introduction into the proceedings of members with wider experience, graver counsels, and more mature judgment might be beneficial. I hope some of the "older folks" will take the hint.
