THE ABOLITION OF STATES. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Melbourne, August 19. In the 'House of (Representatives, Mr. Bai. .'ord obtained leave to introduce a Bill providing for a referendum on amending the constitution in order to reconstruct the States by t'he elimination of States' boundaries, the abolition lof State Governments, and the substitution of a uniform system of government through out the Commonwealth. The Bill proposes to divide Australia into provinces, each with a Parliament consisting of one House, -with such powers as are conferred by the Federal Parliament. Although leave was granted to introduce the Bill, a member briefly announced his intention to oppose it later. CABLE SUBSIDY BILL. Melbourne, August 19. The Cable Subsidy debate was continued. An amendment that steps be taken to complete an All-Red route and substantially reduce terminal charges in Australia, was defeated, and the resolution carried. NEW SOUTH WALES ELECTIONS. Received August 20, 12.45 a.m. Sydney, August 19. The session of Parliament has concluded, preparatory to the general elections. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN' LEGISLATION. Received August 30, 13.30 a.m. Adelaide, August 29. The Assembly put the finishing touches on the ißail'way Superannuation Bill, the Clerical Workers Bill, and the Industrial Disputes Amendment Act (which extends the wages boards system). After accepting the Council's amendments, the Second Ballot Bill was passed.' THE ARBITRATION BILL. [Received August 19, 10.20 p.m. Melbourne, Last 'Night. ■ln the Senate the third reading of the Arbitration Bill was passed without material alteration.
