1 "TURNER" PICTURE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Thursday. . Edward Wignall, a retired steveuore living in Auckland, has in (his possesr Bion a picture depicting a seascape with' the rock of Gibralter in the background,; which L. J. Steele, artist, pronounces to ibe a Turner and in the best stylo of that painter. Wignall, who is 80 years of age, won the picture in a raffle. If Mr. Steele is correct the picture is worth several thousand pounds. FEDERATION OF LABOUR. Wellington, Thursday.. The New Zealand Federation of Labour has sent the following cablegram to the Newcastle Miners' Federation: — "We tender the heartiest congratulations on the release of your comrades, and trust the persecution recevfed has 1 added to your detem. ■ ...ion to fight | for the overthrow of i.-pitaiism." The ! telegram was signed by Mr. Semple 1 (president) and Mr. Glover (secretary). INDUSTRIAL ORGANISATION. Wellington, Last Night. The Federation of Labour, formerly the Miners' Federation, met in conference to-day, but press representatives were not admitted. President Semple, in revising the work of the year, said the work of the future lay in giving less and less attention to political means of obtaining their rights, but rather to perfecting their organisation in the industrial field.
UPPER THAMES MINING. ! Waihi, Thursday. A monster meeting of burgesses was held last evening, protesting against certain recommendations of the Silt Commission, The Mayor presided. Several resolutions were carried', the chief objections being that the redistribution of the gold duty and the uiwn road question were not referred to the com-' mission; that those who produced the gold duty were better entitled to it than farmers; that the borough balancesheet was misquoted regarding rates collected and subsidies received; that the gold duty was already pledged to Government in respect .of the water works loan; that unfair comments had been made regarding local rating; tnat by clause 5 the scope of the commission was altered. It was resolved to get up a petition to present to Parliament. All the resolutions will be forwarded to the Premier, the Minister for Mines, and the member for the district.
