FEDERAL LAND TAXES
UNEASINESS IN LONDON. By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright Received August 18, 10.30 p.m. London, August 18. An article signed "Imperialist" in the Morning Post, says there is a certain uneasiness in London financial circles as to the effect of Mr. Fisher's land taxes. It is impossible to be truthfully reassuring in regard to the prospects of British companies holding large properties. It was equally clear that the proposed tax would make the holding of large areas in an unproductive form absolutely impossible. The taxes were certain to pass without serious alteration, and ther" was remote chance of their being declared unconstitutional. The propose! taxes would' cause grave injus. tice unless the Act safeguarded city landlords. The difficulty might be met by a provision that the penal rates do not operate as regards areas under ten acres. It is unlikely that the financial stability of Australia is endangered. The aim of the legislation —to settle numerous small yeomanry—is good, but the method is experimental.
