THE PROPOSED FEDERAL SUBSIDY

The conditions proposed for the cable subsidy include the transmission of at [least six thousand w6rds weekly from Europe or America, by the Pacific cable, [unless it has broken down, when transmission may be made by some other route.
i The proprietor of any newspaper in the Commonwealth is entitled to become a subscriber to the association receiving
the news, on payment of a fixed rate of subscription, and will not be liable to any penalty or disability for publishing cable matter received from other sources than the association. The association must transmit and supply to its subscribers any information on matters of Australian interest supplied in London by the High Commissioner. The association to be entitled to charge the Commonwealth Government press rates in respect of matter transmitted. The rates to subscribers are fixed at a maximum of £IOOO annually for I metropolitan papers in Sydney and 'Melbourne, £750 in Adelaide and Brisbane, £SOO in Perth, £3OO in Hobart, and £2OO for newspapers in the chief provincial cities, £SO in minor cities and towns. These charges are additional to the cost of transmission by land lines.
