HOSPITAL BOARD.
The Taaanaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board held its. regular monthly 'meeting yesterday. Present: Messrs: V. C. J. Bellringei (chairman), G. W. Browne, W. Cutfleld, M. J. Meßeynolds, C. Andrews, J. iR. Hill, C. O'Sullivan and D. H. McDonald. ~ MEDICAL REPORT.
. Dr. E. A. Walker, medical superintendent, reported that during the month there had been-29 patients admitted, 30 discharged, and three had died; leaving 39 patients in the hospital. It had been an exceedingly .busy month in every department, but the strain had been well borne by a loyal nursing staff. The scant accommodation for infectious diseases was overtaxed, and admission,of further cases was impossible.
MIDWIFERY DRAINING. 'Mr. McLean, Assistant-Inspector of Hospitals, to accept two pupils each term for free midwifery training in each of the St. Helen's Hospitals. These pupils are for country districts, and must be selected or specially recommended by the hospital and charitable aid board of the disr trict. The Board must be satisfied that there is need in the district, or the special part of the district, for a trained midwife; that the applicant is 6ne who ■would not be able otherwise to obtain her training, owing to lack of means; that she is a respectable woman, and sufficiently well educated to benefit bj I the teaching, and pass the examination j under the Mid wives Act; that she is willing to work for two years after com- 1 I' pleting her training in the part of the hospital district which is approved by the Board; she must sign an agreement with the Board to this effect. _She should, if a woman not on the register of trained nurses* be between the ages of 25 and! 40. The name of applicant, j and the recommendation of the Board,) with the reason for such recommendation, j must then be forwarded to the InspectorGeneral of Hospitals. , who will, if ap-| proved, obtain the authorisation of the i Minister in charge of hospitals to give | a vacancy for training in one of the .St. Helen's Hospitals without charge. It will be necessary then for the applicant; to await a vacancy, and to pass the ordinary month of probation in the hospital before being finally accepted for trhininp. It must also be understood' that even after passing the first month of probation a pupil may, if found unsuitable, be discharged without completing training.
, OLD PEOPLE'S HOME. Mrs. Bayly, matron of the Old People's Home, reported that everything at the home was .satisfactory. One inmate had been committed to the mental hospital, and there had been three other departures. One male had been admitted. There were now in the home thirty males and five females. .Accounts amounting to £452 6s 4d were passed for payment.
