CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent. Stratiord, imst JSignt. A meeting of the executive of the Chamber of Commerce was held to-night Present: Messrs. J. Masters (president). J. Hewitt, N. King, S. Ward, I. Richards, W -H. Young, and W. C. Cargill. The Wanganui Chamber 01 Commerce wrote stating that they had not as vet taken any steps regarding the charges of transhipment a t Wellington, but wnen anything definite was done they, would advise the Stratford Chamber. Mr. C. A. Marchant, County Chairman, wrote stating that the Council had resolved thtik the landowners be remindthat the obstacles across the Mountain end of Pembroke Road were to be removed, and this might be considered as the initial step towards the improvement of the road. The Council had some time ago agreed to pay one-third of the 'Wat, providing the remainder of the ■'.mount was forthcoming. The Union Steamship Company wrote stating that they could not see weir way to make any reduction in the freight charges at the present time. The President reported that he nad waited on the manager of the Union Steamship Company at New Plymouth, in support of an application for a reduction in freight. A comparison 01 the figures during a corresponding tiiree months of 19l)S and 1010 showed that there had been an increase of 400 tons. He contended' that this was justifiable reason for asking for a reduction It was set out as a cause for the increase of freight that consignments, on the opening of the Main Trunk ane for passenger traffic, had dropped off and the half-crown was being imposed to meet this deficiency. In company with the president of the New Plymouth Chamber of Commerce !he visited the goods shed. The principal cause oi delay in the transit of goods was the lack of room, preventing the expeditious handling of goods. It •. . w.-iccded that the only real solution v. .'.m ro">lem was to widen the shed. It had Deeu arranged to endeavour to get representatives from each town along the railway line to wait on the Minister of Railways when he visited New Plymouth. The New Plymouth Chamber were going to taks up the matter oi the reduction of freights. Mr. Ward pointed out that the Union Company appeared not to take into consideration the difference 'between the boats which were running now and when the passenger traffic was brisk. If the passenger traffic had fallen off, so had the class of boats. He suggested that the co-operation of the representative bodies of the towns between New Plymouth and Hawera be sought. The matter was left to the president and secretary to follow up. It was decided to hold a general meeting in a month's time.
At the Roman Catholic Church this morning, Mr. 11. J. Kirkwood, youngest son of Mrs. A. Kirkwood, of Stratford, was married to Miss £!sic anpptsr, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Slipper, of England. Miss M. Huteueson was bridesmaid, and Mr. Don Cameron feat man, the bride being given away toy her uncle, Mr. F. Plnmtree. The officiating minister was the Rev. Father O'Dwyer. Mr. S. Pitt returned to Stratford last night after a month's sojourn in New South Wales. On account of the poor attendance, the meeting of those interested in the formation of a municipal band to nave been held last night did not eventuate. Miss McQuay, of Messrs. Hunter and Clarke's dental staff, sustained a nasty injury to her hand yesterday through a heavy iron shutter jambing her hand. Word has been received that the railway authorities will not "speed up" the afternoon train on Thursday, the occasion of the Waimate-Stratford match.
A young man named John Withers, alias Smith, pleaded guilty at the 6. M. Court this morning to forging the name of H. A. Prebble to a cheque for £2. Aceused was committed to the next sitting of the Supreme Court at New Plymouth for sentence.
