CRICKET.
TARRANT'S SUCCESS. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright London, August 15. Tarrant, the Australian cricketer who plays for Middlesex, has scored 1200 runs and taken 100 wickets so far this season. NOBLE REFUSES TO AGAIN PLAY. Received August 17, 12.55 a.m. Sydney, August 16. In view of the visit of the South African team, Mr. M, A. Noble was interviewed on the question of re-entering cricket. He said: "I still love the great national game, but when 1 reflect upon the ibelittling methods of those governing cricket in New South Wales, I feel I cannot with dignity again play big cricket under its auspices."
AN UNSAVOURY SUBJECT. (Received August 16, 9.30 p.m. London, August 16. The Morning Post says the South African team controversy is somewhat unsavoury. The demand for a financial guarantee was quite unexpected. Expenses must have been calculated on a [liberal scale when £SOOO was required for a three to four months' trip. The refusal of the guarantee caused less surprise, but it was unpleasant to hear that one reason was a fear that when the money was safe the visiting team might be weakened by the withdrawal of prominent players.
