DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondents.) HILLSBOfiOUGH. We are to have a visit from the Waireka Minstrels on Friday night next, 19th inst., and as it will be moonlight and the entertainment quite out of our ordinary form of amusement, it is hoped the settlers will turn out in force and give them a good hearing. The annual plain and fancy dress ball takes place on Thursday, the 2oth inst., in aid of the Hall fund. An enthusiast committee of ladies have the supper rangements in hand and have placed t I order with Mr. Percy Lealand. The coi mittee are giving prizes for the be fancy dresses, one for the best larh and for the best gentleman's. C. ; music will be supplied, together with good floor. All that is now requir to ma>ke it a financial success is a fi night and a big attendance. EGMGNT VILLAGE. Very few people assembled in the h on Tuesday evening for the fortnight meeting of the iCrib Club. Single-hand crib was played'. Mr. F. Cheffings w the first prize. Messrs E. Dewhirst a Wm. Keese tied for second place, Ji 'Dewhirst winning in the play-oft. On Wednesday the 'Hall Improvement Committee held a successful euchre party, a large number of players being present. Mrs. H. H. Olson annexed the ladies' first prize (cups and saucers) and Miss L. Harvey the second (breakfast cruet) , while Mr. B. Herbert got the gentlemen's first' (tobacco pouch) and Mr. 0. Kinsella the second (pens and pencils). After cards dancing occupied the time, and, although there was a dearth of ladies, an enjoyable evening was spent. The music and supper were excellent. Mr. S. Carter, the new creamery manager, has gained some distinction in junior cricket circles, and should prove an acquisition to the local Saturday team, which promises to be very strong this season. The local pitch has been re-laid, and is now ready to be rolled. It is probable than an early start will be. made. The state of Mr. R. Price's health is causing his friends anxiety. Influenza has been very prevalent locally, but there is a decrease in the number of eases during the last week.
