EARTH-EATING DISEASE.

A SPECIALIST'S REPORT. ALCOHOLISM AND CAN® CUTTING. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright •Received August 15, 9.30 p.m. Brisbane, Last Night. Dr. Brenel, Director of the Tropical Diseases Institute, reports that the earth-eating disease is prevalent in the Cairns district. A number of children are treated at the 'hospital every week. The disease, so far as the children are concerned, is> permanent and blighting in its influence on the mental and moral development.

■ Touching the question of whether a white man could stand the strain of cutting sugarcane in the tropics, Dr. Brenel is of opinion that alcoholism and other debilitating habits did much more to impair the health of workers than cane-cutting.
