Sir Wilfrid Laurier, addressing 10,000, settlers at Alberta, said: "You are all free traders. <1 am also. finances must at present be raised from Customs duties." He promised a revision of the tariff, and expected that reciprocal trade with the United States would speedily 'be established. The United States, he said, was knocking at Canada's door, but until now Washington had made no fair proposal.
EMPIRE PREFERENCE FAVORED. Received August 14, 5.5 p.m. London, August 13. . Tfce Times' Toronto correspondent says that the Western farmers who demand a lower tariff are overwhelmingly favorable to Empire preference, and denies the likelihood of a material reduction in duties.
