Spring. September 29 and October I—Wanganui -J.C. Spring. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa."')
The Canterbury Grand National meetu; will be concluded to-day. The Australian Steeplechase will be run at Caulfield this afternoon. Entries for the North Taranald Hunt Club'* meeting close on Monday at 9 jwn. • \ The talk of the week! What, a champion is. '; Brilliancy is trained iby W. Sheeny at Wanganui, and not at Palmerston as stated by a Wellington paper. Lovejl was well supported all over the Dominion for the Beaufort Steeples and punters had to die satisfied with a very poor second dividend. , For a horse that has shown up prominently in open steeplechases this season, Oakley returned a handsome price when he gathered in the Hunt Club Uip on. Thursday. Judging by his display in the Beaufort Steeple Honest Tom must have oeen very unlucky to go under to old Glengariff in the Enfield Steeple on Tuesouty. The doubleflayers were all heavily struck on the National double. A wellTmown Wanganui boniface landed £SOO, over the twoiaces. Bookies' troubles are nothing to punters' troubles. Many who have won big sums will find the money hard to collect; and a recent Supreme Court judgment is that there is no law in the laud to make the pencillers disgorge. The' .Sydney-fit will be quite common next! "week. The party behind Paisano are not afraid to bet when their horse is ready and it is estimated that their winnings on Thursday must have totalled -n.««y thousands. At Trentham they laid «w until the last minute and when the Gisbonje horse was knocked right back in the betting they sent "a mug" in with a roll of notes to accept the liberal odds He did his work well and the lafacy •that the neddy was "waiting for the National" very quickly exploded right there. » What the bookies said when Paisano lobbed it out could only be ex-
pressed in red ink. j The week's Taring at Riccarton dreW| ita usual toll of the horses racing there.; The principal disaster was the loss of Audax through breaking a leg, but Nero, I Kremlin and Mauri broke down and Le, Beau, Totika, Kingsway, Circw Girl and! several others were more or less injured by forgetting to rise at the obstacles, i The Hutt-trained Penza let down a ( big army of admirers in the Winter Cup but the' Wellington horse is improv-; .ing with every gallop and is sure to "make .good" very shortly. ' ! Second again! The veteran Paritutu: has once more filled the role of runnerup in the Nafional Hurdle Race. Added to that, a second" in the New Zeaiand Cup—in Noetuiform's year— and the Taranaki horse reads a champion un-, lucky performer., Some people reckon ( the horse is badly placed and argue ,that if he had been put to chase smaller game his record of winnings would have placed him much higher in the list of winners. The horse that "isn't quite oood enough" for the best class might very well turn out "too good" for the next best class. I For to-day'a Australian Steeplechase, run over four miles of bristling counrj try; the following horses have made the! 'final payment:-Orafnax 12.12, Ripon: 12.9, Confederate 11.11, Acer n.ll, Workmaster 11.9, Nigel 11.5, Seymour 10.13, Kororoit 10.11, Coir 10.9, Generality 10.7, Diorite 10.7, Golden Brown 9.13, Charlemagne 9.13, Squirm 9.7, and flb Troubl* 9.0. . ( ' Lovell must be accounted an unior-; tunate horse. He has run into a place an aearly every race he has contested this season, tot close seconds seem to be his forte! Both at Wanganui and at Riccarton he jumped boldly and but ( for interference by Jack Pot (at Wanganui) and Hoaest Tom (at Riccarton) | the Porirua-trained 'chaser might havej teen returned a winner ." • [ Acceptances for the Melbourne Cup; include:—Master Soult, Aborigine, teyoi, Iranui, Artillerie, Lady Lucy, Milan,Golden Slipper, and Idyll. Amoagstl those which have dropped out are Nobel,Full Sail, Formeden and Peterhof. | That safe conveyance, Kaatere, ran a. couple of good races at the National, gathering and should be all the better | for the racing he has gone through. After the meeting, he, Bullworth and; Woolloomooloo will be shipped across to Sydney where they should pick up a few good races. - Waitapu was generally reckoned to! have a good chance in the National' Hurdles but the big horse got boxed in! and came a cropper at the second fence,! his »der, Clarence O'Neill suffering severe injuries. Waitapu may s*» oa\ a particularly dashing fencer but hj« usually manages to get round safely. North-East has so far proved a disappointment at Riccarton. but indifferent starts would probably account for his failures. Considering the weights, times have been very fast at Riccarton and -the top weights could not be expected to show up at the business end of the mile run by Rose Noble on Thursday in lmin 42 4-6 sec. It was a good gallop. North-Bast is now meeting most of his opponents on better terms and both he and Penates may be expected to show up again during the next few starts. Spaniard was not started on Thursday, biit will carry a lot of money the next time he sports silk. Master Paul scored another runaway victory on the opening day of the meeting but the handicapper is now taking} care of him and he does not strike one as the sort of horse to carry weight. He| can go a bit, but Ms jumping is of the fearsome type. Woolloomooloo is mow in the pink of condition and should soon put a good victory over hurdles to his credit. Half-a-dozen' seconds were recorded against him over the sticks this winter, 'but 'he -should get over that.
