X.Z. RUGBY UNION. £SO DONATION TO BAYLY SCHOLARSHIP. By Cublp:—Press Association.—Copyright Wellington, Last 'Night. The Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union met to-night. The Marlborough Union wrote complaining that their players did not get justice •when a South 'lsland team was] being selected. So far this season the selectors for the South Island had not once seen 'Marlborough men playing.— The Committee resolved to reply that a scheme was being brought up by which the selectors would be enabled to see a number of the best players from smaller unions.
A newspaper paragraph was forward-! Ed by the Otago Union, stating that there was an unusual rumor abroad that certain members of the New Zealand team iwhich recently visited Australia had received payment for loss of time.—The Committee decided to rep'.)', denying the statement. k The Manawatu Union forwarded a request tendered by the Feilding Football itflub that an appeal should be placed before the Appeal Council in respect of a recent refusal of the New Zealand (Rugiby 'Union (Committee to decide the question connected with the forfeiture of a match to Old Boys.—The Committee decided bo state a case for the Appeal Council. The Queensland Union wrote that as the public had found great attraction in the Northern Union game they considered the Rugiby game should be made more open. Several amendments were suggested.—The Committee expressed its intention of not approving any amend-! ments additional to those recently drawn up by the Australasian Conference, and sanctioned Iby the 'English Union. Financial assistance to extent of £!,- 800 was asked by Hawke's Bay Rugby Union on account of the purcahse (for £1320) of football grounds at Hastings. —A: reply was authorised by the committee to the etiect that no New Zealand Rugby Union money was available at present. Two young Nelson players, who had taken part in a practice game under Northern Union rules, were granted reinstatement. The Committee decided that the North v. South (inter-Island) match shall be played at Ohristohuroh on Saturday, September 24, subject to the ground terms ibeing arranged satisfactorily. The following were appointed bo select teams:—North Island: Messrs. D. Gallagher (Auckland), A. Humphries (Taranaki) and H. D. Thomson (Wellington). South Island: Messrs. S. F. Wilson (Canterbury), H. Harris (Otago) and R. Gal•braith (Southland). The Taranaki Rugiby Union WTote, regarding the Alf Bayly 'Memorial Scholarship. It pointed out that the scholarship would carry free tuition and £lO per annum, and that the first scholarship would be competed for this year. The iiount in hand was now £165, and it was 'hoped to increase this to £2OO and add to it year by year. The amount in land would ensure £lO per annum, and the other £lO per annum required was made'up by an annual grant of £5 from each of the Education Boards interested, viz., TaTanaki and Wanganui.—Tae committee decided to forward a cheque for £6O.
IMPROVING RUGBY. Sydney, August U. A meeting of amateurs convened by L, G. Abrams agreed that it is imperative in the interest of Rugby players •and th. public that the union shouldi alter the rules so as to make the game more attractive, also that personal out-of-pocket expenses not exceeding ten shillings per day when away from home •be received without forfeiting the amateur status. The players present pledged thmselyes to call meetings of their clubs and vote only for delegates favouring the above alterations. How the game is to be made more attractive was not discussed, but it will probably be on the lines of the' tfortnuru Luion rules.
A PLAYER CHARGED WITH ASSAULT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. » Wellington, Thursday. An information has been laid against Arthur (Rangi) Wilson, captain of the Athletic senior football team, charging him with having assaulted Duolri ualcfaai, a Poneke forward, last Saturday, causing him actual bodily harm. Wilson, who is very popular in sporting circles, recently toured Australia with the All Blacks. The match on Saturday was decidedly rough, and several players were injured. Spectators frequently called out regarding various players, 'Tut him offl" but the referee, Mr. Fordhain, apparently did not see any infringement of the rules .. i* the direction of punching or scragging Before the spell' ended Calcinai had' to leave the field with blood flowing from his mouth. A subsequent medical examination disclosed that he had a broken jaw, and it is unlikely that he will be able to speak for a fortnight. The information laid against Wilson charges him with an indictable offence. A special meeting of the union will be held to-morrow. The police have subpoenaed a dozen people.
TARANAKI RUGBY UNION. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. The Executive of the Taranaki Rugby Union met to-night. Present: Messrs. Cargill, Chalmers, Buchanan, Scott, Malone and Skoglund. Stratford protested against Inglewood HI. on the ground of a senior player haying played for Inglewood. Inglewood admitted the circumstance, and the match was played flff on Thursday. (Hawera Ist Juniors protested against Okaiawa on the ground that Johnston, a reinstated player, has played for Okaiawa.—lf the case is proved, Hawera will get the match. The play-off between Clifton 111. and Waimate HL was left in the hands of the Executive to arrange.
The Eltliain Domain Board agreed to let the Union have the ground for the Stratford-Waimate play-off on Thursday ion a 10 per cent, basis. The Taranaki Education Board intimated that, subject to the approval of the Auditor-General, it will make a £5 grant annually to the Alf. Bayly Scholarship. The referee in the Waimate-Okaiawa match reported Pini, a Waimate player, for rough play, but could not say that he actually saw Pini kick an opposing player.—Pini will be cautioned. The referee in the Eltham-Clifton match reported' P. Jones, of the Clifton team, for "giving him cheek," for which he ordered him off. M. Cain, of the same team, was reported for questioning the referee's decision. The forwards of both teams were cautioned for rough play.— \ Both teams are to be written to. '. A North v. South match will be played on Thursday, the 18th inst.
TARANAKI V. WANGANUL, The following team will represent Wanganui against Taranaki at Hawera on, Saturday—JTuMack, L. Emergencies:—Backs: Carroll, Jago„ Bignell; forwards, O'Donnell, O'Halloran, Marchant. EIA ORAS v. HIGH SCHOOL. On the High school ground yesterday a very interesting match took place between the above teams. Although Kia Oras had 16 points to the good, the match on the whole was very even. Tries were scored for Kia Oras by Francis (2), Joll (1), Mumby (1). Lovell and Stockman converted one each, thus giving Kia Oras another win by 16 pts.
