SUCCES&'' v By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A meeting of citizens was held this afternoon at the invitation of the Mayoress (Mrs. T. M. Wilford) to consider her scheme initiated on Tuesday week to raise funds for the erection of a children's hospital. The gratifying announcement was made that subscriptions to date amount to £3707. The Bev. Van Staveren stated that a citizen had promised if the public subscribed £4500 to come forward with a cheque for £SOO. Mr. Wilford read a letter from the Chinese Consul, stating that the Chinese residents of Welling-' ton had subscribed £123 for the Mayoress' fund. It was decided to endeavour to bring the fund up to £SOOO, and to close it next Wednesday. His Excellency the Governor was elected patron of the fund, Mr. Wilford, president, Mrs. Wilford, vice-president, and Mrs. Wilford and Miss Joseph, treasurers. A committee of over seventy men and women was formed to conduct tne »est of the canvass and generally supervise the funds.
At this stage of the proceedings, which were marked by great enthusiasm, the attendance had grown to such proportions that the meeting was shifted to the large Town Hall, where Miss Grace Palotta sold by auction seats lor Saturday afternoon's performance. A total of £B7 was realised the seats bringing from 7s Cd to £2.
