MAYOR OF NEW YORK SHOT

Mr. Gaynor, Mayor of New York City, who was about to sail for Europe, was shot aboard the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, and is reported to be dead. He was on the upper deck of the steamer with a group of friends, preparing to be photographed, when shots were fired. The taird penetrated his neck. A policeman clubbed' and seized his assailant, who gave his name as Jules James Gallagher, ex-watchman at the docks. He said he shot Mr. Gaynor because he had deprived him of bread and butter.
Mr. Gaynor was taken in an ambulance to the hospital, where the bullet was located an inch below the right ear. The doctors are hopeful that they will save his life.
REVENGE THE MOTIVE. WOUND NOT DANGEROUS. Received August 11, 12.30 a.m. New York, August 10. Mr. Roosevelt telegraphed that he is shocked beyond measure. The radiograph shows that the bullet is in two fragment-, and does not demand an operation. It missed the important blood vessels. The condition of Mr. Gaynor is satisfactory, and there is no fear. The second shot slightly wounded William Edwards, a street-eleaning commissioner, who was famous as a Princetown footballer. Edwards instantly overpowered Gallagher, who was much mauled. Gallagher was dismissed for drunkenness, and a letter from Mr. Gaynor's secretary, refusing to i reinstate him, was found in his pocket.
