The Narrajransett vaid was due to six, • I informers, headed by Cross, a newly-' created constable, without a warrant or the knowledge of the Chief of Police. The raiders were armed with axes. They overpowered the guard at the entrance and rushed the roulette hall, which "was luxuriously appointed. The raiders drew revolvers. The brilliantly gowned and bejewelled women insid'e with the men were in utter p ( anic. The women gave false names, and many pleaded release on the ground of their husbands' anger. Constable Cross, however, was adamant. A sum of £GOOO sterling was upon the table, and was confiscated. Caswell, the Chief of Police, arrived and ordered the police to desist. Cross refused, and a fight ensued. Cross and the raiders were arrested and charged with assault. Afterwards, three motor cars mysteriously arrived and removed every, trace of gambling.
