List), in the course of their report, remark: "Frankly we are disappointed with the essays. With very few exceptions the have failed to grasp the idea of, the competition. They were asked to describe, 'What I saw of New Zealand-made goods and local industries during show week.' Few have done this at all systematically. It i s noticeable, also, that all the Assays from one school bear a striking resemblance to each other in the train of thought, and tlle . expressions running through t lem, indicating that the master has tailed to appreciate that the essays were intended to be the unaided efforts of the pupils, written, for preference, under his supervision so that there would be some guarantee that the conditions were observed."
