BAYLY MEMORIAL MATCH. STRATFORD (14) v. COMBINED (14). '. The match between the combined team and Stratford proved very even. The game was remarkably fast, both sides making it open. The advantage tliat the! combined team held.in the back division was counterbalanced by the superiority of the Stratford forwards. For threequarters of the game the red vanguar dominated the play, but as the pace began to tell its tale, they wearied, the opposing backs got more openings, and tlieir speed and resource enabled them to pull up. The game opened sensationally. Mynott centred, and Stratford just saved a score. From a scrum the ball passed from Brown to Mynott, to Stohr, and the latter player, beating the Stratford backs, made a fine opening for Potier, who ran over unopposed. Stohr converted, The red forwards carried play down the field. From a mark, Mynott' fooled his opponents, and kicked in an unexpected direction. His forwards overran tie ball, and Boon, putting in some fas. work, almost scored. From a penalty almost on the combined line, Uameron placed a goal. Then the combined team took a hand in a passing rush and Dive nearly got in. "The red forwards taliated with dashing rushes. Cameron got possession, and kicked down field, the opposing full back mu.;ed, and the reds carried the ball over the line, Tocker converting. The combined team were throwing the ball about freely, sometimes imprudently, and Cameron, intercepting a 'pass, scored an easy try. Burgess failed to convert. A smart passing rush between- Mynott and Tate placed Stratford in trouble. The game swept up and down the field, the red forwards having the best of it. A clever piece' of work by Anderson was nullified by a smart maris by Brown. Towards the end of the spell both teams slackened off a little. For half the second spell the game was even. Young made a fine opening with a dribble, and Cameron, picking up, was collared on the line. From the scrum Cameron sent a long pass to Abbott, who was unmarked and had no difficulty in scoring a try. No goal resulted. Then the combined team began to press, and Stohr getting possession passed to Dive, who beat Anderson and scored. The kick at goal failed. Shortly after Potier had hard, luck, in not scoring a try. He followed up a kick which passed over the line but lost the ball, Stratford forcing. Soon after, Brown'getting possession in the local 26, put in a fine run, and when near the line; transferred to Crowley, who scored. Dive's kick failed. Just on time, a passing rush between Stohr, Dive and Tate enabled the Clifton three-quar-ter to cross the line. Stohr's kick went outside the posts. The determination of both teams to make the game open caused it to be a most attractive match to watch. The combined team had the cleverer backs, but there was lacking that combination between the centre men and, the wing three-quarters to make it an effective scoring machine. Dive showed particularly good form and was well supported by Brown,'.Stohr and Mynott. In the for-1 wards, Ward and Osborne were most I prominent. .Stratford, owed its position to the forwards. Fast;-.'keen in following up, and dribbling well, they gave the Oppoßing:backs. plenty of defensive work. Possibly,- Boon and Smith were the most prominent of a very fine and even set of forwards.- In the backs, Anderson played a really fine game at full tack, and is one of the most promising young, players in TfiJra.rihki. Bonner was solid in defence. Cameron was as dangerous on the attack as* usual. Mr. -F. Spurdle refereed, TARANA'KI REP. TEAM. The Kia Oras, in their second match) this season, met the High School on the latter's ground yesterday and, after as., fast and most exciting game,, defeated 1 High School by 13 to 3. Throughout the first spell the School kept their oppon-l ents defending their linn, and in a lineout, just before the whistle sounded, a School forward got possession of the leather and, falling over, scored for the •School. School 3, Kia Ora 0. In the' second spell Kia Oras wound themselves up, and things were then reversed. Time and again they had opportunities of scoring', but over anxiety prevented them. Their hacks were now playing with more combination. With ahout only ten minutes to go, Kururangi, from a kick, took the leather and kicked high, and, following up, beat one or- two of the School backs and thus drew first blood' for Kta Oras, scoring just behind the - ' posts. White missed the kick. Soon after this the ball came out' and the KiaOra Ibacks were again seen on the move;: the Ml just went out by the School's comer. From a throw-hr, Jacob dashed through and scored at the corner.,' Lovell made a beautiful attempt, the ball just missing the posts. Shortly after this White caught the hall and potted a splendid goal. Kia Ora i'O, School 3. A minute or two from the finish the run of the day took place. Willis ■ snapped up the leather smartly and passed' to iSkipper, to Kurangi, to White, the latter scoring by the corner. Lovell failed with the kick. Kia Oras 13, School 3.
