CANADA'S FISCAL POLICY

THE INFLUENCE OF THE WEST. UNCLE SAM IMPROVING THE SHINING HOUR. By Cable.- Press Association.—Copyright Reci ived August 4, 9.5 p.m. London, August 4. The Manchester Guardian, commenting on the Manitoba Grain-growers' Association memorial, says it shows the influence of the West, which was at length making itself felt against the manufacturing interests which hadi controlled Canada's fiscal policy for the past thirty years. The future of Canada lies in the West. If the West declares for free trade, politicians will quickly listen. The Westminster Gazette and other Liberal papers make similar comments. The Morning Post says the increasing prosperity and influx of American settlers have made the agriculturists of the West less anxious to extend preference to Britain. The American Government and trusts are anxious to take advantage of Britain's refusal of preference, and convert Western Canada into an annexe of the States. The American Industrialist • declares that Americans are ready to make a small sacrifice in order to divert Canadian trade from Britain to the United States.
