CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
[ To the Editor. Sir—One of your ieading articles in last Thursday's issue dwelt briefly on the prevalence locally of cruelty to horses, and from the spectators point of view, I am sure this vital subject must have received hearty endorsement by your many readers. (By the way, 1 fell certain your many well comprised and straight spoken truths are much appreciated). 1 hope the arwcie 1 nave referred to reached the' eyes of those offenders for whom it was chiefly intended. On the same morning (Thursday) I had the displeasure of seeing a young fellow eliminating part of his temper by flogging a pony (which he was driving in a gig) most unfeelingly, apparently because it had not kept quite in the centre of the road for a couple of yards, caused mainly by the driver's incapable handling of the reins. This brutal action occurred in the presence o«f several ladies and gentlemen, and Ij heard; one of the latter remark to another: "I suppose he thinks he's clever, but he is really—frightened of it." It is not only the horse that suffers, as passers-by must feel very pained when witnessing such barefaced cruelty imparted by their fellow creatures. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals should certainly have a longer arm of control ift this town so as to endeavour to check this extremely regrettable and« il'.bred habit.—l am, etc., FOND OF ANIMALS.
