THE LATEST CUNARDER. ,
Early in 1911' the Boston service of the Cunar.d Company will foe strengthened by the inclusion of a new steamer, the Franconia, news of the launching of which was cabled last week. The Franconia has a gross register of about 18,000 tons. She, will be propelled by twin-screws, driven by reciprocating engines* and will have a sea-speed of sixteen knots. About four miles of girders and about 100,000 square feet of scaffolding area were utilised in the construction of the vessel. The number of men engaged on the construction of the boat was about 3500, but this, of course, does not include a small army of decorators and others, who will perform their allotted tasks ibefore the ship is ready to receive her first passengers. AN OLD-TIMER.-Home advices report that the old Tongariro, one of the favorite vessels of the New Zealand Shipping Company, in the nineties, is about to be broken up. Built on the Clyde in 1-883, with a gross tonnage of 4215 tons, she ran in the New Zealand trade almost continuously until the end of the century, when she was sold to the British India Navigation, Co. Her name in the later company's service was Zibenghla. ■ *■■"■■• OVERSEA VESSELS. FOR WELLINGTON. From London— Kumar.a (due about August 3), sailed on June 4, via Auckland.
