NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA
RECIPROCITY URGED. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Received August 1, 11.20 p.m. ' Melbourne, Last Night. A deputation representing viticultural interests asked' Mr. F. G. Tudor (Minister for Trade) to make an enquiry with a view to reciprocal arrangement as regards wines. They suggested that, in return for preference to Australian wines, remissions of duty might be made in respeejt of bluecod and oysters. Mr. Tudor said he would be glad if he could do anything to improve any Australian industry, but recalled the fact that whereas the Australian Parliament had received the Seddon-Beakin reciprocity treaty favorably, the New Zealand Parliament turned it down. New Zealand did not want remission on fish or oysters then, but on oats. According to the deputation, if the wine industry died out, sixty-six people would be affected, but it wowld be far worse, in order to save that industry, to give New Zealand reciprocal treatment in connection with some article that would displace many more operatives. He promised consideration of the matter.
